A Disturbing Materialism — And Following Amusement
This isn’t anime-related, but moreso a social moment I feel the urge to relate. I had an initially unfortunate experience today while at the movies with my Grandmother. There was a really, really old woman being ushered in (she needed help etc) to come and watch Transformers. Now, totally awesome that someone of that age wants to watch such a movie. But not so awesome was an attitude that broke out.
Buncha guys, probably a bit younger than I am (let’s say inbetween 16-19) are sitting in the row. There’s a bunch of empty seats in the middle next to them. The usher asks if one of them could move down a seat or two to let the old lady sit. The guys not only refuse to move, but give the usher a speech. “We paid for our tickets, don’t hassle us, we’re not moving”, and so forth. But there’s… Like five extra seats further down the row right next to them.
It was apparently too much trouble for them to sit up, step over a foot, and sit back down for an old lady’s comfort. It seems that because a person has bought a ticket, they are entitled to being as big a bastard as they so please.
My Grandmother is a strong lady, despite her 68 years. Appalled and aghast at the situation, she stood up and went right over to the row of jerks. I hear what amounts to “By George I’ll give you what for!” (my Grandmother’s Australian and loves her old-style slang), rants at them, and then proceeds to pull one of them up from his seat by the ear.
Boy howdy did they move quickly once she did that. I think people are extremely scared of being physically disciplined in this day and age — especially these sorta guys. So in the end, there was a space of about four seats between them and the old lady and she got to watch her movie all nice and quiet-like. She was really thankful to my Grandmother too.
I love you awesome Grandma.

Your grandmother rules. Seriously. The fact that people don’t normally stand up to asses like that might explain why there are so many of them these days. Why do so many people think that certain things are ‘their right’ to the expense of others? Why are they so misguided that they think that the world somehow owes them? We need more people like your gran who are prepared to do the right thing!

Wish I had been in the theater to see that. That would’ve been better entertainment than the movie. >_>

Grandmothers are awesome. My own grandmother did something similar to my first grade teacher many many years ago because the teacher was yelling at me and stole some candy I had. So, she walked up and gave her “what for”
Nothing beats an awesome grandma, and thank God we have awesome Grandmas
