The Question: Best Work By Kyoto Animation?

14 people answered “Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” (the Haruhiism is still strong…)
7 people answered “Kanon (2006)” (Happy happy, joy joy!)
6 people answered “Air TV” (not a fan myself, but I can’t say I’m surprised)
6 people answered “Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu” (WTF? This ranked higher than…)
4 people answered “Lucky Star” (WHY IS LUCKY STAR ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE?!)

Okay. Okay.

Okay okay. I’m fine. I’m just rather shocked that Lucky Star is the lowest ranked show. Haruhi I expected as the top ranked with how strong Haruhiism has been as a fanbase. But Fumoffu? Okay it was good, but I’d rate Lucky Star as a much, much better product. Well the people have spoken, but really… That’s surprising. What holds back Lucky Star from overtaking some of its companion products anyhow?

In the words of 4chan: “Discuss”.

No way, imho FMP: Fumoffu is my favorite comedy of all time, Lucky Star doesn’t even come close.
I’d put Haruhi at the top, followed by FMP: Fumoffu, Kanon 2006, Air, FMP: 2nd raid and then Lucky Star.

Not that LS is bad or anything, it’s still a great show, but it doesn’t close close to the other KyoAni works I think.

Maybe, just maybe, more people find the gag comedy antics of Sagara Sousuke entertaining than enjoy eavesdropping on discussions between the four most boring people on Earth.

I’m guessing what’s holding Lucky Star back is having more simplified art than the rest, and the first episode starting with a 5-minute discussion on food. Also, compared to another comedy show like fumoffu, the latter is much more accessible. Not that I dislike Lucky Star, I think it’s awesome – as are the rest of the shows listed. I voted for Air myself…

Seriously now, saying that Lucky Star is Kyoto Animation’s worst show is like saying the Doni Tondo is Michelangelo’s worst artwork. The statement doesn’t mean much when the piece is competing against the likes of the Sistine Chapel or David.

Personally though, I’d probably have rated LS over FMP and maybe AIR.

Although perhaps in the minority, I’m a staunch Lucky Star appreciator, and would place it squarely in second behind SHnY. Ramadahl mentioned that Fumoffu is more accessible, being standard slapstick comedy, whereas Lucky Star is highly self referential and encompasses lots of “daily life” humor.

For my part, I find Lucky Star more “accessible” for those same reasons. When the cast discusses how to eat different kinds of food, when Tsukasa starts spamming all her friends with text messages after getting her first phone, or when Miyuki reflexively dodges her eyedrops, it takes situations many of us have experienced and turns them back on us with a twist of crazy humor. Thus, in the end it invites us to laugh at ourselves and the sheer absurbity of everyday life. Certainly different types of humor appeal to different people, but I find the unique blend of off-the-wall wackiness with everyday humor the Lucky Star offers up to be a winner.

That said, I have to agree with Mirrinus. Being at the bottom of a list packed with superstars is no shame, and it says a lot for KyoAni’s versatility that they’ve produced such a variety of shows and made every one a winner.

Yeah, I’m sad to see Lucky Star getting so little love, given that I still can’t decide whether I like it better than Haruhi or not. I enjoyed Kanon, but that’s just the Key-fanboy in me; I enjoyed the 2002 series, although many hate it (although that was the first anime I saw, so… sentimental value there.). Air was certainly pretty, but I didn’t find it to have the same … something … as Kanon. As for FMP: meh. I enjoyed it the first time, but I don’t think I could watch it again.
