On the Lucky Star License

I uh, recently jumped up and down in my chair upon believing that Lucky Star had been licensed by Kadokawa. Of course, that is really really stupid of me considering Kadokawa /owns/ Lucky Star. I also understand this “announcement” of Lucky Star being “licensed” has caused some confusion. Allow me to rectify that by saying: I’m a dumbass, Lucky Star has not yet been licensed to a North American distributor, but it IS up for bids via Kadokawa.

Yeah, uh, sorry about that. I’ll be more thorough in future. >_>

Addendum: *facepalms* Okay, so now it IS licensed.

Lucky Star Gets Licensed!

Hey Gentlefolk, looks like everyone’s favourite female comedy quad finally got licensed! Kadokawa Pictures USA has decided it’s time to bring the antics of the four girls to domestic shores. Considering how recently it finished in Japan, I’m really, really excited for this quick adoption. I’ll be quite a bit poorer after all this, but man how happy I’ll be. ^^ Lucky Star’s coming to North America!

Lucky Star 19 — Tamura, Myself, and I

Close to reality.

It’s scary how closely you can relate to a bit character sometimes. Say what you will about elitists who get hung up over bit characters, I am and always will be one. While I often do love the main cast, the secondary cast is often what catches me the most. In the recent Claymore arc (eps. 20-22) and just prior, I find myself relating more to Jeane than Clare or Raki. That’s not to say I don’t understand and like Clare and Raki, but my ethics and personality are most cognate with Jeane.

Well, Tamura is one of those characters. Introduced in episode 19, she’s one of the juniors and an aspiring manga artist. A lot of her reflections and attitudes correspond with my own, on a level that’s somewhat scary. From the nit-picks about one’s own art, to the facepalming at everyday cosplay, it’s odd seeing myself reflected in a caricature so accurately.

Well, the worldly me anyway. But I think that’s something we all do, isn’t it? Reflecting on ourselves via a fictional character, I mean. During the days when I read MegaTokyo somewhat religiously, I began to associate parts of myself with Piro (like 29838719898 other people who read that manga). Looking back, not only is that ridiculous, but also gives me a clue as to how inept I was at gauging myself and critiquing works of fiction. Not to say I’m that able even now, but moreso, moreso.

Where do we leave our illusions behind though? I think self-critique and self-observation via a fictional character may be quite healthy, but based on my past experiences, where do we stop kidding ourselves and find the actual archetypes that reflect us? I wonder what Jung would have to say about that sort of thing — it does fit into his psychological model after all. The thing is, I don’t think I’ve seen another caricature as close as Tamura before.

Lucky Star 19 – Definetly Not Persona 3

Hidoshi, why must you leave me alone with the blog on the same week Persona 3 came out? Think about how much writing I’ve done BEFORE Persona 3 came out. Yeah…

Okay, fine, let’s talk about everyone’s summer favorite, Lucky Star. Produced by Atlus, Lucky Star 19 is a strong RPG with satisfying plot, interesting characters, fantastic music, and deep gameplay.

On the Matter of Poor Fansubbing

So… Uh. Lucky Star 17 and 18. Guerrand. I appreciate the attempt, I really do. But there are some SERIOUS GAPS IN PRODUCTION HERE.

Not having karaoke for the opening is already a tip-off that the team (or individual) behind the subs is not well-prepared for releasing a fansub. Further, the use of the font — while straightforward — is rather difficult to read thanks to a high-chroma red border around everything. There’s a reason people use softer border colours, if borders must exist at all. I personally prefer the good old hardsub style of yellow and black, but that’s because I was raised with it. If you must use white subs, either use a black border or a paled colour. The red is just awful.

Beyond that, lack of character expressions in the text (matching the text to how they actually might speak in English is a nice touch), some very odd choices in wording (“you’re sitting too close” becomes “your face is too close”), and unnecessary subbing (or at least odd positioning of subtitles) of sound effects makes this an overall uncomfortable production.>

Nice try Guerrand, but needs more work. Karaoke would be a start.

Hey a.f.k, what’s going on? :P

Okay, I know when I’m wrong. Please stop throwing tomatoes, they’re clogging the server. ^^;

Lucky Star 16 — Structure and Longevity of Concept

Cultural dating is something you can do with virtually any show. Be it the music, the film grain, even just a hairstyle, the visual clues as to when a product was made are plenty. Some shows take this to a much higher level however, and Lucky Star is one of them. As I watched episode 16, I began to think of just how much of a subculture snapshot the show might become as the years wear on.

Lucky Star 15 — Transience.

It seems that every few episodes, Lucky Star manages to touch on something very close to life. This time, it’s the transience of things.

Amazement.

Konata’s reaction to the concert is exactly the reaction I get when a convention is over. It’s a sense of fatigue, of loss, and sometimes wondering what you could have done to make it better. But more often that not, there’s a sense of amazement — that a time in your life could be that pleasant. It’s a break from your routines, be they for work or pleasure, and thank God for them. Life just wouldn’t be interesting otherwise. The look on Konata’s face during the concert speaks volumes about how a simple event can affect your sense of happiness, of involvement, etc. It’s profound, and sometimes indescribable. Where concerts are concerned, I came away from Sounds of the Ganges River and Play! with that same sense.

Lucky Star 14 and the Big Cute

Foreshadowing!
I don’t even know where to begin. Foreshadowed by the intro, Lucky Star introduces us to two new characters: Yutaka and Minami. While the latter is not referred to as such for most of the show (largely talked about as a girl with a handkerchief), she’s definitely someone I’m keeping an eye on. The quiet-and-tall-girl persona hasn’t been shown so far in Lucky Star, and Minami looks to be the first instance of this archetype. While Miyuki may have fit it, her sunny disposition departs her from this idea quite heavily.
